Best blood test under $500: panels, repeat testing, and care (2026)

Function Health is my pick under $500 for broad testing with a scheduled follow-up. Empirical Health is my pick for a lower-cost single panel, and WHOOP is worth comparing if you want the same comprehensive panel twice. I have used Function, Quest, and Empirical; the right purchase depends on the tests and follow-up you need.

Which blood tests can you get for under $500?

“Under $500” means the listed panel or first-year membership price. These are standard in-lab offers, not guaranteed all-in quotes for every state. State fees, home collection, optional tests, and medical visits can push a purchase over budget. Annual memberships also renew unless canceled under their terms.

What is the best annual blood test under $500?

I would start with Function at $365 if I wanted broad baseline testing and planned to use its smaller mid-year panel. Its coverage includes advanced lipid testing, thyroid markers, hormones, nutrients, and lead and mercury. I found its dashboard useful; its written clinician notes were less actionable than a consultation.

The 160+ annual test count includes repeats. Check that the follow-up includes the markers you intend to track. Read the Function review and test guide before committing.

What is the best single blood panel under $500?

Empirical’s $190 panel is my lower-cost choice for a baseline including ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP, HbA1c, thyroid screening, vitamins, and blood and urine results. Physician interpretation and access to medical care distinguish it from buying a lab report alone. Visit coverage and treatment costs depend on your plan and location.

Two full panels would cost $380 before extras. Empirical’s separate $399 heart-health program includes custom retests at three and nine months over 12 months; it does not provide three identical full panels. See Function vs Empirical for the differences.

Vitals Vault is another one-time option. Its $399 Max panel adds tests beyond its $99 Essential and $199 Advanced tiers. Compare their actual lists before spending more; a larger count does not mean every additional entry is a separate assay.

Which option is best for repeat testing?

WHOOP’s $349 two-test annual plan works out to $174.50 per comprehensive panel. It is worth considering when you want the same 75-marker panel twice, especially if you already use a WHOOP band. You can buy the labs without a wearable membership.

That differs from Function’s broad baseline and smaller follow-up, and Empirical’s tailored program retests. Compare which markers repeat before dividing the price by the number of visits.

Should you spend the full $500?

Only if the extra coverage or support is useful to you. Apple’s $119 Quest panel is convenient within the Health app but lacks the thyroid and vitamin testing offered by broader packages. If you only want a few known markers, the individual test cost guides may identify a cheaper purchase.

Superpower’s $349 list price and advertised $150 discount deserve separate treatment. Do not assume $199 is the renewal price. Its published pages differ on whether a second draw is included; confirm the selected offer rather than budgeting for a free retest.

Check the final price, exact tests, renewal terms, and who will discuss unexpected results. Written review, messaging, and a medical appointment are different services.

How we chose these blood tests

We shortlisted services in our database with listed purchases below $500, then compared coverage, testing schedule, and help after results. These are purchasing recommendations, not evidence that one panel improves health more than another. More testing is not automatically appropriate for your circumstances.
