DHEA-S test cost: $20–$55

By Elo. Last updated September 1, 2026.

DHEA-S costs $20, and it answers a narrow question: whether your adrenal glands are the source of an androgen excess. Signs of unusual hair growth or acne with irregular periods are what it's for.

Outside that workup it's hard to act on. DHEA-S falls steadily with age in everyone, so “low for your age” describes most adults past 40 and doesn't by itself indicate a problem. It shows up in wellness panels as an anti-aging number, which is not a use any guideline supports.

Below, we compare what a DHEA-S test costs at each lab, inside a bundle, and what insurance pays.

How much does a DHEA-S test cost?

DHEA-S costs $20–$55 on its own, or $105–$499 in a bundle. Those are cash prices, so that's also what DHEA-S costs without insurance.

DHEA-S test cost by provider. On its own: DrSays $20, Mito Health $20–$26, Ulta Lab Tests $46, Marek Diagnostics $50, Walk-In Lab $55. In a bundle: Quest $105, Mito Health $207, Parsley Health $275, Superpower $349, WHOOP Advanced Labs $349, Function Health $365, Vitals Vault $399, Everlywell $399, Marek Health $495, InsideTracker $499.

Lowest DHEA-S self-pay prices

The lowest cash price we found for DHEA-S is $20 at DrSays, followed by Mito Health ($20–$26), Ulta Lab Tests ($46), Marek Diagnostics ($50), and Walk-In Lab ($55). These are all-in prices that include the draw fee: DrSays lists DHEA-S at $9.99 and adds a $9.99 collection fee, for $19.98 total.

Cost of DHEA-S in a bundle

Ten packages we track include DHEA-S, and every one of them tests dozens of other markers from the same draw. The cheapest bundle with DHEA-S is Quest's 2-biomarker panel at $105, then Mito Health ($207 for 77 markers), Parsley Health ($275 for 41 markers), Superpower ($349 for 59 markers), WHOOP Advanced Labs ($349 for 65 markers), Function Health ($365 for 114 markers), Vitals Vault ($399 for 58 markers), Everlywell ($399 for 86 markers), Marek Health ($495 for 56 markers), and InsideTracker ($499 for 48 markers).

How much does a DHEA-S test cost at Quest Diagnostics?

Quest Diagnostics doesn't sell DHEA-S on its own. It only comes in Quest's Cortisol & DHEA-S Adrenal Function Panel, at $105. Ordering DHEA-S alone from another lab we track costs from $20, or $105 if you want a 2-biomarker bundle.

Is a DHEA-S test worth it?

Rarely. DHEA-S is useful in a specific workup, mainly signs of excess androgen like unusual hair growth or acne with irregular periods, where it helps point at the adrenal glands. Bought on its own as a vitality number, it won't tell you much you can act on. It's mostly here because panels include it.

Either way, the price shouldn't be what decides it: DrSays sells DHEA-S for $20 all-in. The cheapest panel that includes it is Quest at $105, which is only worth it if you want the other 1 markers too.

Does insurance cover a DHEA-S test?

Insurance usually covers DHEA-S when a doctor orders it for symptoms or a known condition, though you may still owe a copay or deductible. The in-network negotiated cost is about $20 to $45, against $20 if you pay cash. At a hospital lab the billed charge can reach $150 to $700.

Flow chart of how a DHEA-S test claim is paid. If your plan's medical policy doesn't cover DHEA-S, you owe the billed charge of $150 to $700. If it clears, the allowed amount is $33: you owe all $33 under your deductible, about $7 once it is met, and $0 past your out-of-pocket maximum. Paying cash instead is $20.
How a claim for DHEA-S gets paid. The plan's medical policy decides whether anything is paid at all, and only then do your deductible and coinsurance matter.

The $33 allowed amount is an estimate, about 1.5x Medicare's $22.23 rate for CPT 82627, and it moves with the lab and the market: the same test is contracted around $18 at one national lab and into the $40s at another. Coinsurance is assumed at 20% once your deductible is met. Your own plan decides both, and most plans apply lab work to the deductible first, so the second outcome above is the one most people land on.

DHEA-S is billed as CPT 82627. That's the code to quote if you call your insurer to ask what you'd owe.

Frequently asked questions about DHEA-S testing

What is the cheapest way to get a DHEA-S test?

The cheapest DHEA-S test is $20 at DrSays. If you'd rather get more markers out of the same draw, Quest's 2-biomarker panel is $105.

Do I need a doctor's order to get a DHEA-S test?

No. The standalone DHEA-S tests listed above include the physician order in their price, so you can buy online and have your blood drawn without seeing a doctor first. You'd only need your own doctor's order if you want to bill the test to insurance.

How much does a DHEA-S test cost at LabCorp?

LabCorp doesn't publish a flat consumer price for DHEA-S, and what you're charged varies by location. The cheapest way to have DHEA-S drawn at a LabCorp Patient Service Center is through DrSays, a LabCorp-network lab, at $19.98 all-in ($9.99 + $9.99 collection fee).

What is a normal DHEA-Sulfate level?

DHEA-S reference ranges fall with age and differ by sex, so results are read against an age- and sex-specific range rather than a single cutoff. Young adults generally have the highest levels.

Why would I get a DHEA-S test?

DHEA-S is measured to evaluate the adrenal glands and to investigate signs of excess androgens, such as acne, irregular periods, or excess hair growth in women. It is often checked alongside other hormones when assessing PCOS or adrenal disorders.
