Does insurance cover an HDL test?
Usually yes, as preventive care. Most plans cover it at $0 for eligible adults, with no copay if you meet the criteria. Medicare covers the screening lipid panel once every 5 years, not annually. Outside those rules the negotiated cost is about $15 to $25, and cash is $33. Drawn at a hospital lab, the same test can be billed $150-800, so use a standalone or in-network site.

What is a good HDL cholesterol level?
With HDL, higher is generally better. Below 40 mg/dL in men and below 50 mg/dL in women is considered low and raises cardiovascular risk, while 60 mg/dL or above is considered protective.
Can I raise my HDL cholesterol?
Regular aerobic exercise, quitting smoking, and losing excess weight can modestly raise HDL. Very high HDL, above roughly 80 to 100 mg/dL, does not appear to add extra protection and is mainly genetic.
